Gills Onions, located in Oxnard, California is one of the world’s largest onion processors,
peeling, slicing and dicing up to one million pounds of fresh onions daily.
Since Gills Onions inception 25 years ago, the Gill Family has been aware
of the burden that its business has on the environment and has continuously
explored ways to minimize its impact. By nurturing the land they farm and
conserving precious resources they are able to consistently produce onions
of the highest quality without compromising the valuable resources necessary
for future generations. Of the one million pounds of onions peeled
each day, up to 300 thousand pounds are discarded as waste. However, to minimize the impact of this waste
stream, Gills Onions has developed a proprietary process to convert this waste
into ultra-clean electricity for its operations and high grade animal feed.
Gills Onions farming philosophy of “waste not, want not” has therefore been
able to turn what was a waste problem into profit. Gills Onions is serious about their commitment
to sustainability and has recently set a company-wide goal of Zero Waste. The Bren School with the help of Team Onion is going to enable them to
meet this challenge. |
