Abstract
Instituitons play vital roles in managing global environmental problems. Of late environmental problems such as sanitation, pollution, natural resource degradation have become very challenging both locally and internationally.
In Ghana, the problem is assuming very huge proportion in view of increasing population growth and the inability of institutional policies to effectively deal with the problem.
I undertook a research on the above topic to look at critical institutions that deal directly with environmental issues. The research critically examined four institutions. These institutions were the Environmental Protection agency (EPA) Ghana, Local Government, National Commission for Civic Education (N.C.C. E.) and Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology (M.E.S.T.)
It was identified that policies of the institutions were very ‘beautiful’ and promising but the implementation deviated from what was documented. More so the policies of these institutions were identified not to be proactive enough to deal with the dynamic and complex nature of global environmental changes.
The research also recommended institutional capacity building including policies relevant for addressing global environmental problems.
I would like to share this knowledge and practical experience with colleagues who are also research partners in global environmental change.
