About the Program on Governance for Sustainable Development

Our Mission
The mission of the Program on Governance for Sustainable Development is to promote sustainable societies through a multidisciplinary effort to advance the theory and practice of governance for sustainable development.

Our Activities
The Program promotes a systematic effort of scholarship, research, and other activities to help design and implement better rules and institutions to address the challenges of sustainable development:
  • Research: Through basic and applied research involving social, political and physical scientists, lawyers and economists on specific problems of governance, the Program builds intellectual capital about the effectiveness of governance in a variety of settings.

  • Teaching: The Program helps to educate future leaders through graduate courses and the supervision of interns, visiting fellows and Ph.D. students at UCSB's Bren School of Environmental Science & Management.

  • Conferences, seminars and workshops: The Program organizes academic and non-academic conferences, seminars, and workshops addressing specific topics of interests to researchers, policy-makers and other practitioners.

  • Capacity Building: The Program offers a range of capacity building activities on governance for sustainable development to policy-makers, legislators and other constituencies at UCSB and other forums.

  • Publications: The Program sponsors books, articles, and occasional papers for publication to stimulate discussion and disseminate knowledge on governance for sustainable development.
