Crosscutting Themes

Compliance

Compliance is often thought to be a function of monitoring and enforcement but is actually a more complex behavioral response that is impacted by a variety of factors. There are a variety of institutional forms that compliance systems can take, including incentive based structures on the one hand and command and control mechanisms on the other.

This theme aims to examine the nature of compliance, exploring what constitutes an effective compliance mechanism and under what conditions.

Knowledge

Knowledge about the environment has often been a catalyst in the development of new environmental management institutions. On the other hand, once institutional rules have been created they can have a significant impact on the research agendas of scientists and ultimately on the production of knowledge.

This theme focuses on the two-way relationship between social institutions and the generation of knowledge (including technological innovations), examining their effects on one another.
