LEADING YOUR CAMPUS TO CLIMATE NEUTRALITY
The following 'Steps' were formulated
by using the findings from CCN I and CCN II's studies.
Step 1:
Inventory GHG emissions
Step 2:
Identify a champion, ideally a faculty member or a person with power on
campus
Step 3:
Build a broad coalition of campus stakeholders: faculty, staff
(including the functional unit--the people who implement GHG reduction
mechanisms), and students
Step 4:
Assess feasibility and perform financial analysis ($ per GHG reduced,
IRR, payback period) of various GHG reduction mechanisms
Step 5:
Frame the issue in the language of the university (understand the
university's decision-making criteria, including timeframe, and draft
recommendations accordingly)
Step 6:
Develop a plan with concrete emission targets that recognizes the campus
culture, timeframe, and budget constraints (climate neutrality may not
be a feasible initial goal for all universities)
Step 7:
Present to campus decision makers, understanding that organizations face
different constraints than individuals

UCSB to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
CCN II Project Brief: What factors
determine whether or not American public universities take advantage of
opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially when doing
so is likely to save them money? A theoretical case study of UCSB.
